The Lovely KateEver since I saw Kate Winslet in the role as Rose in "Titanic" I have been so fascinated by her. I really admired her character in the movie, and I can remember the feeling of wanting to be her so much that I actually dyed my hair orange and used a curling iron every day to create Rose's curls. This was at the age of 9, so that meant that the hair colour came from one of those cheap cans you get from toy stores etc. and I never had the patience to make lovely, wavy curls - it always ended up as a kind of orange frizzy afro. I can't believe my parents let me walk out of the house looking like that. Luckily this period passed quite quickly, but my admiration for Kate Winslet has always stuck with me.
One of the reasons why I like her so much is because she seems so down to earth and sympathetic. Kate has been, and still is, a very successful woman, and it doesn't seem to have gone to her head. In the December 2008 issue of Vanity Fair she says at one point: “This is going to sound really weird,” she muses, “but I never had a desire to be famous. I never had huge ambitions—never.… I was fat. I didn’t know any fat famous actresses. I just did not see myself in that world at all, and I’m being very sincere. You know, once a fat kid, always a fat kid. Because you always think that you just look a little bit wrong or a little bit different from everyone else. And I still sort of have that".
In my opinion, Kate is also one of very few actresses in her generation that are truly talented. By looking at her performances, it's easy to see that not only does she have a very natural acting talent, but she is also a hardworking person who doesn't settle for anything less than perfection. That is what makes her such a beautiful actress and an inspirational woman. “I know that in order to do my job as truthfully as I can—because to me that’s everything—you really have to not give a fuck [about what people think]. You have to be prepared to look stupid and you have to be prepared to walk around naked in front of a crew of people you’ve never met before and may never see again. And it is scary.”
And I also love the fact that she seems so sweet and happy most of the time. I guess you would feel sweet and happy most of the time when you've got a life like hers, but it's not always a given that you're always grateful for what you've got.
"Happiness for Winslet, outside of work, seems to hinge largely on simple pleasures. “I need to be looked after,” she says. “I’m not talking about diamond rings and nice restaurants and fancy stuff—in fact, that makes me uncomfortable. I didn’t grow up with it and it’s not me, you know. But I need someone to say to me, ‘Shall I run you a bath?’ or ‘Let’s go to the pub, just us.’"
So if there are a few things to learn from the lovely Kate Winslet, it's 1) Be comfortable in your own skin and body, 2) Work hard, and you'll achieve big things, and 3) It's the nice small evryday things that really matter!
