Accessorize U.K. Arrives in the U.S.!

...or more accurately Accessorize is coming to New York City!! According to WWD a 400-square-foot store opens at 329 Bleecker Street on Oct. 28 and an even bigger unit at Union Square. I literally cannot wait because I have been buying myself those colorful little change purses and fabulous jewelry trinkets from Accessorize for as long as I can remember some of my oldest visits to London. In that marvelous British city there used to be an Accessorize on practically every street corner (much like Starbucks in New York's big city), and I'd make sure to visit every single one in case I missed one single change purse style!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2011 Begins!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City begun yesterday, and I'm so excited to see what the designers will be sending down the shiny new runway for Spring 2011 (I know, I can barely process the end of this summer and we're already forced to think about the next!). So get ready for a Fashion Week blitz here on RedPoppy, where I'll be bringing you all the gorgeous looks and accessories from the runways! Of course it will have to wait a day or two because this year Fashion Week coincides exactly with the Jewish New Year, which I will be celebrating with my family and close ones. So with that in mind, have a lovely meaningful weekend, and I'll be back shortly in full force!!!

Project Runway Season 8 Episode 1 Premieres: And Sew It Begins

Hello Designers! Project Runway Season 8 is finally here and Heidi (with a questionable new shag 'do') and the gang are back with a new crop of aspiring attention grabbers (most of them over 12 years old this season which pleases me greatly) and a load of new 'Twists'! Our new group of 17 designers gather at NYC's newly minted Fashion stage Lincoln Center for their first challenge where Heidi and Tim confess that it was nearly impossible to narrow down the group to 16 because they were all so darn good. So their first challenge actually becomes the final stage of the audition process! No one is safe! And that's Twist #1.
Let me just note one designer who already stands out: Casanova and his impossibly tight red pants who is "taking New Jork by the balls..." I love him already and so will the producers when they make sure he sticks around for many episodes to come...

And now for the first challenge each designer must go hunting in their tightly packed suitcases for one item of clothing which they will incorporate into their first garment. Twist #2: they must pass their beloved item to the person on the right. Darn! There goes Casanova's very very expensive pair of Dolce & Gabbana pants. Twist #3: They only have 5 hours to complete their garment.

Back at the Parsons ranch we are all surprised to see that MOOD fabrics is in the house!! No need for the traditional field trip to MOOD which will save time and presumably money (I didn't notice anyone actually paying for their yardage so I'm guessing it was on the house). Tim arrives in his familiar wise mentor fashion which always sends a warm feeling spreading across my chest. Among Tim's workroom progress comments are some gems: Gaah "Good heavens!", "Is it sexy or is it vulgar?", and the winner of the week:"The cap sleeve worries me"...Like a creepy doctor, Jason (with cocky hat in tow) is distracted by his model's unusually large bust, Peach's garment looks like it's out to lunch rather than fit for a lady who lunches, and Casanova's model is almost completely nude save for a bikini and a sarong hanging by a thread...

This could only be Tim laughing out loud at Casanova's lack of fabric yardage

Mondo concentrates on sketching. Love his spotted bandana btw

And now it's Runway time and it's sure good to see Michael Kors and Nina Garcia back with fresh tans and pedicures, sitting alongside guest judge Selma Blair, sometime actress and permanent surly face (although she does know a thing or two about fashion). Coming down the runway I am loving Andy South's pants outfit which looks pretty amazing, and I LOVE sustainably green Gretchen's beautiful and effortlessly flowy black dress with beaded cap sleeves. Everything else was a blur of garbage bags and cheap taste, most notable being Jason's 'deconstructed' backwards kimono which was stapled and pinned into a drab mess of one ugly bathrobe. Nina's nose couldn't help but flare disapprovingly at the enormous amount of messes coming down the runway. Meanwhile we aren't yet sure how many designers are going home tonight, but according to my calculations for awfulness it must be at least 9... and yep! Heidi announces that the entire group of 6 designers still standing after the first 11 leave the runway, are ALL in the bottom. No one is safe. So who's design is the least offensive tonight?
Let's try and guess via some of the judges' comments:
"She looks like an '80's streetwalker"- Nina on April's Deconstructed (aka unfinished) Tux
"That is Butt ugly"- an eloquent Heidi on McKell's cute but tastefully questionable dress
"She's a pole dancer in Dubai"-Michael Kors on Casanova's scantily clad model. Brilliant. Love it! Twist #4: Nina blurts out some perfectly sexy Spanish in her smooth Colombian accent, and I can tell this is going to be a very different season of Project Runway. Twist #5: The judges are curiously united in appreciation for Casanova's 'fascinatingly bizarre' (aka trashtastic) look, and its clear the producers were buzzing in the judges' earpieces as they too are bizarrely fascinated with Casanova (as I had predicted), and so his awful nostalgic ode to Jennifer Lopez and that green Versace dress from 2000 is, against all common fashion sense, safe. Someone please explaaaaaaaaaaaiiin......!!!
Thankfully the judges were also unanimous in crowning Gretchen the clear winner! The Portland, OR native clearly deserved it. So until next week, stay tuned for more RedPoppy Recaps, thought, and twists on the next episode of Project Runway...

RedPoppy's Sex And The City 2 Review

Like most Sex And The City fans I was brimming with excitement to once again see the faces of Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York, and watch the old girls dressed up in their $10M movie wardrobe budget finery. I couldnt wait for the main eye candy, aka THE CLOTHES, but forty minutes into SATC's 2 hours and 27 minutes 'romp' I started to get seat bum fatigue, thanks in part to an unsatisfying silk-thin plot which turns the Fabulous Four of glamorous New York City into a bunch of ungrateful complainers on their way to visit Lawrence of Arabia...

But let's get back to The Clothes! After all SATC is also known as Fashion And The City, and on the whole it did not disappoint. Miranda in particular looked the best she's ever looked: hair and makeup were flawless (except for the scary perm she sported in the karaoke scene), and save for a few disastrous clothing picks (as soon as Miranda landed in Abu Dhabi her wardrobe went south), I loved her all-white skirt/jacket/fedora 'Out of Africa' ensemble for an Abu Dhabi tour of the souk, and the gorgeous studded black dress she wore to Stanford & Anthony's swan-filled wedding. As for Carrie, I loved the J'Adore Dior vintage shirt and purple Zac Posen tafetta ball skirt look for her Souk jaunt with Miranda, and I LOVED all the Halston Heritage dresses she gracefully paraded throughout, especially the blue sparkly number (and Carrie dares to whine that she and John James Preston aka Big lost their 'sparkle'...)

I'm sure Carrie's heels were equally gaze-worthy but all I can remember is more Louboutins than Manolos! Samantha's red Karaoke dress with 'poke someone's eyes out' shoulder armor by The Blonds was a Samantha Jones standout, as was Charlotte's red and white striped traveling suit. There were also some fabulous hats, and necklaces, and handbags, and bracelets galore, but possibly the worst look of the movie belonged to all the ladies when they changed into some really obscene 'camel riding' attire for a desert romp, looking more like the opening act for a Vegas circus show...

While the first Sex And The City film brought a happy, if bumpy, ending to Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte's years of singleton suffering which we all identified, laughed, and cried with, the second installment gives each of the characters a seemingly artificial reason to whine and complain, and make a mockery of SATC's loyal fans in the meantime. Why oh why didn't they make those 1980's flashback scenes longer?? Starting with Samantha's menopause, Miranda's frustrations with a chauvinistic boss, Charlotte's motherhood and perky nanny woes, and Carrie's lackluster relationship with Big (which by the way bored me to tears), none of those concerns felt convincing enough to take us out of the New York City we know and love.

As soon as the Fabulous Four touch down in Abu Dhabi (Morocco was actually the stand-in thanks to a no sex in their city filming ban by the UAE) all hell breaks loose. Sure, the all-expenses paid palatial hotel suite with personal butlers was eye-poppingly luxurious, as well as the chauffeur-driven sedans which conveniently trekked each of the gals through the desert, plus there was that powerful scene in the hotel suite bar between an emotional Miranda and Charlotte, but I could practically feel myself cringing as soon as Samantha (stealing scenes right and left) opened her Westernly mouth and suitcase, filled with a week's worth of revealing outfits better suited for a jaunt to Palm Beach. Throw in a very un-nostalgic appearance by Aidan, a handsome cocky Danish architect, an inevitable arrest, a horrifying display of souk brazenness, and I couldn't help but wish for an Aleksandr Petrovsky mirage...
