Nothing Beats the Beat of Dinagyang 2008

Last Sunday (January 27), the place where I live, celebrated Dinagyang 2008. Dinagyang is the biggest and most colorful religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines. It started some 40 years ago in honor of Señor Santo Niño.

It was considered as the one of the grandest and most spectacular street parade in the country wherein colors and sounds were put together into a dance that reverberates in a multitude of figures and body kinetics. It was a dynamic and religious merry-making activity that symbolizes the devotion of every Ilonggos in making Iloilo "the only one" when it comes to its own story of faith and culture in perfect timing.

Checkout the following photos that reflects the Ilonggos celebration in their most fashionable way...

*Dinagyang was voted as the best Tourism Event for 2007.

Tina Fey, Gisele Bundchen, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Whoopi Goldberg, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony in Disney's Fairytale Ads

If I'm right, this must be the third batch of Disney's Fairytale ads. Together with photographer Annie Leibovitz, Disney created a campaign ads that stars Tina Fey as Tinkerbell, Gisele Bundchen and Mikhail Baryshnikov as Wendy and Peter Pan, Whoopi Goldberg as Genie and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as Jasmine and Aladdin and Jessica Biel as Pocahontas.

Let me show you the ads fresh from the fairy godmother's portfolio...

B And C And J Are For Boring Clover Jewelry

I'm sorry, but this whole Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra clover jewelry phase -- you know: that clover line that Heidi Klum knocked off for Mouawad and then got pissed off when everyone else knocked off her knockoffs AND Van Cleef & Arpels'? You've seen the necklace a billion, trillion times on Reese Witherspoon -- has got to end (and Marisa, if you're reading this, we love and miss you!). Don't get me wrong, Van Cleef & Arpels makes some of the most stunning pieces on the planet. (I especially love their vintage brooches). And maybe the Alhambra clovers had more meaning when they were first introduced by the company in the 1960s. But today, the ubiquitous clovers are just overly preppy and a bit of a snoooooooooooze. They're just so soccer mom-y, which I guess Reese sorta is but in a good way, because it's better than being a soccer mom in a Posh Spice way, right?

Allowing time for your soul to appear

It might have been a miserable, grey Monday morning in January but looking out of the window this morning to see a quiet misty scene I could not help but think of the work of my favourite fashion photographers, Paolo Roversi. If only the Archway scene could have been a little more Area Homme like!

I have been seeking inspiration and flicking through fashion magazines and my scrapbook drawer one thing is clear: I can always turn to Paolo Roversi. These images may be old but this editorial has stand in memory more than anything else over the last few months and the reason for this is the mixture of clothes and Roversi's trademark photography. Roversi's trademark black and white photograpy using 8 by 10 inch Polaroids. When I grow up I want to be just like him.

As Nadar said many years ago, at the beginning of photography, 'Everyone can learn the technique of lighting. What is very difficult, and what you can’t teach is a feeling for the light, a sentiment of the light.'

Roversi is quoted as saying "When I take a picture using window light, I always think about what a long trip the light is making to reach my subject." I want to be this man.

His pictures are just wonderful... I first saw this shoot via Style Bubble back in October last year and I don't think I'm exagerrating when I say that it stayed with me more than any other shoots I saw last year. Added to the mental scrapbook even though the photographer's name was forgotten!

I do remember now that his photos were the best thing about that otherwise disappointing exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery... good choice Steve!

The 2008 SAG Awards; The Dresses

America Ferrera and Tina Fey showed up in one-strap pieces. Tina looks very elegant and chic in this Alberta Ferretti dress, but she would have received more brownie points if she had chosen something with a bit of colour, but hey, it's Tina Fey..she'll look classic and pretty in anything so the brownie points ain't going low anyway ! America is quite the stunner in this dress by Monique Lhuiller and the colour of it makes her stand out in the crowd because it is so unique. It's something other than black (take notes Tina!) and the material is absolutely gorgeous.

A few were seen in short strapless dresses. For instance, we have the absolutely magnifique Michelle Pfeiffer in Versace, and the very stunning Rebecca Romijn looking glamorous and artistique. And then there is Sophia Bush, who, if I may say so, looked a tad boring. Still, it's cute, shoes are cute, Sophia is cute..whole lotta cuteness going on so nothing to be too worried about folks !

Then there were the floorgrazing versions of the strapless dress. First off, Angelina Jolie appeared in what I may refer to as something very similar to a potato sack. Okay, I am going to rise above the pregnancy rumours and I am not going to question why she is wearing that "thing", also known as a vintage Hermès. Those two couldn't possibly be linked together. Yeah right...but who knows..maybe they just want to joke around with the media? One of my favourite gowns was worn by Marion Cotillard. She wore a gorgeous piece by Nina Ricci with amazing grace. And Amanda Bynes looked adorable. I'd love to have that dress, designed by Marchesa, in my closet. Well, a girl can dream. Her hair was all hippie-like which I love..oh please pretty please let there be more celebrities in hippie/boho inspired dresses! (a little pause) Yay, my prayers were answered! This will do very nicely thank you very much indeed Kate Hudson. Always the flower-power-girl Hudson didn't disappoint me this time either in this creation by Balmain.

Ooo-errr, the glitz and the glam. Of course we need a little of that too ! Just take a look at Debra Messing. There is someone who took notes during fashion lessons. The dress is by none other than Oscar De La Renta, and it is S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G!! But you can't really expect anything less from De La Renta, can you?! Ellen Pompeo, in a dress by Nina Ricci, looks like she is wrapped in tin-foil. Don't get me wrong, it's not completely hideous..but you know you can do so much better Ellen ! Becki Newton looks like a Greek goddess in her Elsie Katz Couture dress, and Eva Longoria brought "Va-va-voom!" to the SAG Awards in her Naeem Khan creation. Both look incredible! Christina Applegate, however, doesn't manage to give her Elie Saab dress the attention it deserves, but still she manages to give off that vintage, glamour feel which I love.

Bold and bright colours were hot at the awards. Kyra Sedgwick got a lot of well-deserved attention with her gorgeous L'wren Scott creation, and Vanessa Williams looked very zesty and edgy outfit from Escada. May I just say she looks her absolute best here ! Marcia Cross always manages to look the part, and she did not disappoint in her Monique Lhuiller gown. I love love love Kate Beckinsale's dress from Luisa Beccaria. She looks so adorable, but when doesn't she?! January Jones doesn't look too great in her pink fabric, but hey whatever floats your boat right? And I can't make up my mind about Rebecca Gayheart...the colour screams hot, but the design..well, err, not.
Which dress is your favourite?
And, if you were to go to the SAG Awards, which look would you have chosen? The one-strap, strapless (short or long), glitz and glamour or bold and bright?
